Dear
SAAHJ friend and supporter,
The San
Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Alamo City’s largest
journalism organization and among its longest-serving, is proud to announce
its 13th annual scholarship
gala will take place on Friday, July 29, 2011, at San Antonio’s Grand
Hyatt.
This
year SAAHJ will award more than $20,000 in scholarships to a new generation
of journalists and media professionals. Since its inception, SAAHJ has
awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships, with $23,000 awarded last year
alone.
In what
promises to be a moving tribute, the prestigious Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism this year is awarded posthumously to the Mexican journalists killed in
that country’s escalating drug war. This is possibly the first time a U.S.
journalism organization honors the courageous reporters, editors,
photographers and others who lost their lives covering Mexico’s war.
In addition,
SAAHJ’s 2011 Community Service Award honors Jesus Rangel, the San
Antonio native who was a reporter for The New York Times, a vice president
for Anheuser-Busch Cos. and now teaches at the University of the Incarnate
Word.
As a
committed member to the San Antonio community, you can help SAAHJ continue
its tradition of helping students of all ethnicities reach their
educational goals by becoming a sponsor of the 2011 gala at one of these
levels:
- Platinum ($5,000): full-page color ad in gala
program, premium seating, company logo placement and admission to
pre-event VIP party and after-party.
- Gold ($2,500): half-page ad in the gala
program, preferred seating, company logo placement and VIP and after
party invitations.
- Silver ($1,500): listing in the gala program
and preferred seating.
- Bronze ($800): listing in the gala
program.
All are tables of eight. Please call (210) 250-3219 or
(210) 913-5019.
Thank you for your
support and consideration,
Nora
Lopez and Javier A. Flores

Recent event:
These were taken by filmmaker
Bill Millet at the Feb. 12 SAAHJ lecture by Berkeley professor David
Montejano at Gallista Gallery.
We had about 50 people crammed
into a small space, where the author of "Quixote's Soldiers"
talked about his new book on San Antonio's role in the Chicano movement.
It turned out to be a reunion of
activists of the time, including Diana Montejano of the Brown Berets,
former state Sen. Joe Bernal, who also served in the State Board of Education;
members of La Raza Unida, Mujeres Por La Raza and the Mexican American
Youth Organization, who participated in student walkouts.

The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists was established in
October 1986. At the root of this dynamic organization is Hispanic
journalists' strong sense of
pride in their professionalism and their cultural heritage. SAAHJ, through
its unity and programs, has five specific objectives:
1. To organize and
provide support for Hispanics involved in the gathering or dissemination of
news.
2. To encourage and
support the study and practice of journalism and communications by
Hispanics.
3. To further and
promote a fair treatment of Hispanics by the media.
4. To further the
employment and career development of Hispanics in the media.
5. To foster a greater
understanding of the cultural identity, interests and concerns shared by
Hispanic media professionals.
