Call to Order:
President Maclovio Perez called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m.
Introductions were done by all present.
Maclovio thanked April Alcoser for hosting the meeting.
Guest
Speaker: Maclovio introduced
guest speaker Blake Hastings, Executive Director from Free Trade Alliance
San Antonio. He offered insights on
the affects of US VISIT coming in January ’05, the role trade for the
border and San Antonio, what we will see during the Del Rio trip, and story
ideas to consider.
Approval
of January Minutes:
Ed Tijerina moved the minutes be
accepted as submitted; Teresa Niño seconded the motion. Thanks to Rebecca Minjarez for taking the
minutes in the absence of the secretary.
Mary Anthony
distributed a membership roster and asked the members to verify their
information.
Treasurer’s
Report – Ed reported the following balances: Scholarship Fund Checking, $4,288.99;
Scholarship Fund Savings, $40,504.95; Operating Checking Account, $1,937.84;
Operating Savings Account, $5,165.53.
As discussed in a previous meeting, Ed reminded the
membership he would purchase a copy of Quick Books and add the software to
the SAAHJ computer at OLLU.
Old Business
Partnership with OLLU – It’s official,
SAAHJ has a physical address at OLLU! The address is 411 S.W. 24th
Street, Main Bldg., Room 416, San Antonio, TX 78207. In addition, our website will be on the
OLLU server. We will pay $24.00/year
for email service and will receive the web space free along with a web
intern. Maclovio expressed the need
to publicize the partnership. We
will have an Open House later in the year.
Nominations for Henry Guerra Award—Maclovio
gave a brief history of the award.
Please send nominations for this year’s honoree to
Maclovio. Voting will take place at
the March meeting.
Writing Contest – Bertha Lopez distributed
a flyer with all of the pertinent information. Francisco Vara-Orta has updated the
school contact information list and will publicize the contest. Bertha invited all members to make
personal calls/make presentations to schools to encourage
participation. Joe asked if we would
also accept entries in Spanish.
After a discussion, the group decided to accept entries written in
English or Spanish. The flyer will
be sent to all members via email.
College Media Workshop Elaine Ayala announced the workshop
would take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 27 in the Wellness Center on
the OLLU campus. There will be several concurrent sessions with Cary Clack
serving as the motivational speaker during lunch. The committee will meet again on
Wednesday. Elaine will send Mary a
flyer to distribute via email.
Although the workshop is aimed at college students, high students
are welcome to attend.
Del Rio Newsgathering Trip—Robert Luna
discussed the itinerary. Several
members took advantage of the early bird registration price and paid their
fees during the meeting. The deadline to sign up is Friday, Feb.
27. Cameras will be allowed
on the tour, let Maclovio know so the equipment can be added to the
inventory list.

Nominations for At-Large Print Officer – Hernán Rozemberg
Nominations for At-Large Broadcast TV Officer – Mary
nominated Robert Luna; Angela Ojeda seconded the motion.Since there were no
other nominations, both candidates were accepted by acclamation.
Congratulations to Hernán and Robert!
NISD Journalism Forum – SAAHJ helped
sponsor this event last year. Ed
asked if we were interested in contributing $100. Elaine made a motion to continue the
sponsorship; Robert seconded the motion.
The motion was approved.
Adjournment – The meeting was adjourned 12:05 p.m.
Next Meeting – March 27 at OLLU, to be held
concurrently with College Media Workshop.
SAAHJ will join the workshop during lunch.
