General Meeting Minutes
Saturday, March 27, 2004
Our Lady of the Lake
University—Main
Building
Members present per sign in sheet: Maclovio Perez, Mary Anthony, Ed
Tijerina, Veronica Serrrano, Jason Olivarri, Hernán Rozemberg, Robert Luna
Call to Order: President Maclovio Perez
called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m.
Approval of February minutes –
Veronica Serrano moved the minutes be accepted as submitted; Maclovio
seconded the motion.
Treasurer’s Report – Ed
Tijerina reported the following balances:
Scholarship Fund Checking, $4,288.99; Scholarship Fund Savings,
$40,508.16; Operating Checking Account, $868.84; Regular Saving Account,
$5,165.94.
Ed pointed out the balance in the operating
checking account is low and we may need to transfer money from the regular
savings account. He suggested doing
a fundraiser next fall to increase the balance.
Old Business
·
Partnership with OLLU – Maclovio gave
a tour of the new SAAHJ office. It
is located on the 4th floor of the Main
Building, next to the
Communications Office. Our physical
address is 411 S.W. 24th Street,
Main Bldg., Room 414 San Antonio, TX 78207.
(We will keep the P.O. Box, for now, but will not renew it. In the meantime, we will add the physical
address to the SAAHJ letterhead.)
Our phone number is 431-3996 and the e-mail address is webmaster@saahj.org. There is a $24.00 annual fee for the
e-mail account.
www.saahj.org
is now up and running on the OLLU server!
Dave Lytle, Director, Network/Telecom Services, is our technical
contact. Mary Anthony said the
website is now up-to-date. Since the
website can only be updated on-site, Roxanne Reyes, our webmaster, will
come to the SAAHJ office periodically to maintain it.
·
Del Rio
Newsgathering Trip – Maclovio reported 25 members and guests attended
in this first-time SAAHJ event. He
gave an overview of the day’s activities and said many of the
participants gained new insight about the border. Maclovio will send thank
you notes to the hosts. Two of our
members did stories: Ernie
Villarreal for NPR and Francisco Vara-Orta for The Rattler.
Ed reported the fee to rent
the bus was $1,025.00. He deposited
$240 in registration fees, bringing the total cost of the trip to
$785.
A discussion followed about
future trips and tour suggestions.
Hernán Rozemberg mentioned the Border Patrol does
“ride-alongs” with media; Maclovio suggested a trip to Austin
to visit the State Capitol. Hernán
agreed to chair a committee to explore possibilities for our next trip.
·
Writing Contest/Scholarship Update –
Information was mailed to high school, college and university contacts in
February. Veronica said the deadline
for the High School Writing Contest is approaching--all entries must be
postmarked by Friday, April 30. She
added the SAAHJ scholarship applications must be postmarked by Saturday,
May 29. Mary reminded everyone the
scholarship application is now on the SAAHJ website.
·
Banquet update – Maclovio asked
Veronica to head the banquet committee.
Veronica will put together a plan and ask 3-4 members to help
her. Mary will share timeline,
mailing labels, letters and other documents from last year’s event.
A discussion followed on a
location, date and cost. Maclovio
said Thursday, August 26 is available at the Westin Riverwalk or
Adam’s Mark Hotel. Mary suggested checking on dates earlier
in the month because scholarship recipients may already be away at school
in late August. Ed reminded the
group we are behind schedule and need to secure a date and location, with a
deposit.
We will not have a keynote
speaker this year, but instead highlight the Henry Guerra Lifetime
Achievement Award recipient. A call
for nominations went out last month; Mary will send a reminder asking the
membership to submit nominations, to Maclovio, via e-mail or regular
mail. Deadline for nominations is
Friday, April 16. Members will
select the honoree at the April 17 general meeting.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 11:45
a.m. Members were encouraged to stay and have lunch with the students
attending the Media Careers Workshop taking place in the Wellness
Center. The next meeting will be
held on Saturday, April 17, at OLLU in the Main
Building, room 410.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Anthony
SAAHJ Secretary
