Old Business:
Banquet Update – Veronica Serrano accepted a job
in Austin and cannot continue as banquet chair, but fortunately
Lorraine Pulido-Ramirez & Melissa Vela-Williamson agreed to serve as
co-chairs of the banquet committee. Lorraine reminded us the banquet is set for Thursday, August 19
at the Westin Riverwalk hotel.
The Cortez family provided a mailing list; 275 letters
and commitment forms have been mailed to potential donors. Melissa explained there was a delay with
the formal invitation. It was
difficult to find a designer to do the design work pro bono, but the
problem has been resolved. The invitation will be printed soon and mailed
out bulk rate. Invitations will be
sent to public relations agencies, ad agencies, local media contacts and
SAAHJ members. Lorraine asked everyone to encourage their employers to support
the banquet by purchasing a table.
Table sponsors to date include State Farm, San Antonio Express-News,
WOAI-TV, and Our Lady of the Lake
University.
The banquet committee would like to provide a unique
gift to Mi Tierra, rather than a plaque.
Elaine Ayala will research the possibilities. A commissioned painting is being
considered.
Melissa
sent a letter to KellyUSA asking for their continued sponsorship of the
table favors. She prefers a notebook-pen
combo and hopes KellyUSA is willing to increase the amount of their
donation.
Carol
Schliesinger-Cura was not present to give a silent auction update. So far, we have received donations from
Houston Astros, McDonald’s, UIW Health
Center, Continental Airlines and Spurs Sports &
Entertainment. Lorraine explained we should concentrate on high-dollar items.
Joe reminded us we need to put an announcement or
display at the Cortez family restaurants with banquet information.
The
committee asked for feedback on how to present the scholarships during the
awards presentation. Do we want to
continue with the format of different members introducing each recipient or
change to have the master of ceremonies announce all of the
recipients? After a discussion, Joe
moved we to continue the current practice as a way of showcasing our
members. Martha Tijerina seconded
the motion and the vote was unanimous to continue with the same format.
Elaine
Rodriguez and News 9 will work on stories to promote the banquet. Maclovio and Francisio Vara-Orta will be
interviewed for a newscast.
SAAHJ Scholarships Results – Chair Robert Luna reported 22 applications
were judged at Trinity University on Wednesday, June 9.
Robert thanked Ed, Melissa, Angela Ojeda and Mary Anthony for their
assistance. The 2004 scholarship
recipients are: Tiffany Colunga, UTSA; Joann DeLuna, St. Mary’s;
Lindsey Gomez, Baylor; Jennifer Herrera, OLLU; Charles Kerr, St.
Mary’s; Celina Montoya, Northwestern; Eugene Ramirez, UIW; Rafael
Saenz, UTSA; Denise Salinas, St. Mary’s and Francisco Vara-Orta, St.

High School Writing Contest – Chair Bertha Lopez reminded us the entries
would be judged after the meeting.
Thanks to Lorraine, Ed, Martha, Mary, Francisco, Roxanne Reyes, and
Javier Antonio Flores for reviewing the essays. Sara Hartnett, Maricela Perryman and
Robyn Morales, all from Health
Careers High
School, will
be recognized at the banquet. Mary
will mail out correspondence to the winners and applicants.
Community Publicity Workshop – will be held from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 28 in the OLLU
Wellness Center. SABJ sponsors
this annual workshop for non-profits organizations. The workshop provides information on how
to get media coverage and an opportunity to interact with journalists. Maclovio said five SAAHJ members are
needed to participate in this workshop. OLLU will send out invitations.
OLLUSA Journalism Mini-Camp Recap -- Robert, Maclovio, Ernie Villarreal, and McNelly
Torres participated; thanks to Hernán Rozemberg for recruiting SAAHJ
members. Twelve high students
attended the mini-camp.
New Business
Urban Journalism Workshop – held at SAC provides two weeks of
intensive journalism training for minority students. Francisco gave an overview of the
workshop. (He and Denise Salinas are graduates.) Irene Abrego from SAC has
made her annual appeal for a SAAHJ-sponsored dinner. The dinner gives the
students an opportunity to network with professional journalists. Ed moved we sponsor a dinner. Melissa seconded and the motion
carried. Mary will notify Irene we
will host the dinner on Wednesday, July 14.
