Welcome/Call
to Order/Introductions – President Maclovio Perez called the meeting to order
at 10:30 a.m. and thanked inHOUSE Consulting Group for hosting the
meeting. Kathy Hill and Lisa Beltrán
gave a brief overview of their business; introductions by those present followed.
Approval
of the June minutes – Lorraine
Pulido-Ramirez moved the minutes be approved as submitted; Joe Sandoval
seconded the motion. Hopefully, the June minutes will be posted on the
SAAHJ Web site soon. Mary Anthony
mentioned the April and May minutes have not been posted yet. Currently, the Web site cannot be updated
off-site. Mary suggested giving Roxanne Reyes, our web master, a key so she
can update at her convenience. A discussion followed on how to improve the
system and the need to discuss the situation with David Lytle at OLLU.
Treasurer’s
Report –
Ed Tijerina reported the following balances: Foundation Checking
$12,003.13, Foundation Savings $40,521.66, Operating Checking $1,852.34,
Operating Savings $5,167.66. Ed
reminded us there has been a lot of activity lately as the banquet
progresses and dues are paid.
Old
Business:
Banquet
Update – The
banquet committee has decided to present the Cortez Family with a $500
commissioned portrait, rather than a plaque, as an exchange for their
contact list. Express-News graphic artist Imelda Robles is designing it.
We are 33 days out from the banquet and the committee is
meeting weekly to finalize the details. They recently selected the menu and
are discussing decorations. So far, there are 16 table sponsorships. Others have indicated interest, but have
not sent a check or asked for an invoice.
Lorraine encouraged all of us to ask our companies/organizations to
sponsor a table. It was suggested
communications members make the follow-up calls to avoid conflict of
interest for journalists. Calls will be made to the following:
KENS-TV – Lorraine
KWEX-TV – Melissa Vela-Williamson
KSAT-TV – Lorraine
San Antonio Business Journal – Melissa
Restaurant Association – Martha Tijerina
El Hispano – Winston Samuel Ojeda
Rumbo – Ernie Villarreal
Connexión – Elaine Rodriguez
SA Woman – Ed will provide a contact number for Lorraine
Clear Communications – Maclovio
Univision Radio – Maclovio
Time Warner – Rebecca Minjarez
Grande Communications – Maclovio
KTSA-AM – Maclovio
Texas Monthly – Elaine
Henry Muñoz – Elaine Ayala
Lorraine said the committee can follow-up if members
don’t feel comfortable asking their bosses for a sponsorship. The deadline for table
sponsorship/individual reservations is July 30, but it may be extended a
couple of days.
Thanks to KellyUSA for again sponsoring the table
favors. This year, it will be a reporter’s notebook with the SAAHJ
logo. KellyUSA will receive a verbal
thank you and a listing in program.
Maclovio reported that Roy Galvan from WOAI-TV is
working on the Cortez Family video. He has conducted the interviews and is
ready to edit the package. Mary suggested we encourage Roy to join SAAHJ.
Carol Schliesinger-Cura distributed a handout with
silent auction donors. She mentioned receiving several Express-News photos
and had them matted and framed. Spurs Sports Entertainment has provided
Silver Stars tickets, but Lorraine will follow-up with Monica Taylor about
getting an autographed Spurs basketball. Cynthia Muñoz said she had
Mariachi Vargas tickets, a La Quinta hotel stay, a State Farm wagon filled
with a variety of items and one hour of mariachi music to contribute. Teresa Niño offered to get an autographed
copy of the book her husband Juan Sepulveda wrote on Willie Velasquez. Fabiola Santiago will try to secure an
autographed copy of the new George Lopez book. Joe mentioned Fiesta Texas
turned us down because they have their own education fundraising program. We are still searching for high dollar
items -- $500 value and up. Carol thanked Ernie for his assistance with the
silent auction follow-up calls.
Maclovio announced Elaine Ayala is working on a printed
program that will highlight SAAHJ’s activities this fiscal year. Ads for the program are priced at $300
for a full-page ad and $150 for a ½ page ad. Maclovio pointed out companies not able
to purchase tables should be encouraged to take out an ad. Send logos to Elaine via e-mail at eayala@express-news.net. The deadline is August 1.
Maclovio explained the
format for the awards program and mentioned he is working on his script.
Lorraine pointed out she will have editing power. Martha Tijerina offered
to find someone to deliver the invocation.
While she had the floor, Martha mentioned Mary had received three
awards for chairing the 2003 gala, including a Clarion Award from Women in
Communications and suggested we recognize her during the program. Maclovio asked Martha to send him
information for the script.
Scholarship Disbursement Question – Robert Luna had to leave
early, so Mary brought up a question he received from one of the
scholarship recipients about disbursement.
Our scholarship is disbursed in two increments: half during the fall
semester and the other half during the spring semester. JoAnn De Luna, St. Mary’s student
and SAAHJ student member, will be graduating in December, should we give
her half or the entire amount? After
a discussion, a motion was made to award JoAnn the entire scholarship,
contingent on written confirmation from her advisor verifying she would
complete her degree requirements during the fall semester. The motion
passed. We will revisit scholarship
disbursement next year and make a rule regarding this question.
High
School Writing Contest
– Bertha Lopez Parsons announced we received 24 entries for the High
School Writing Contest this year. Eighteen of the entries came from Health
Careers High School, thanks to Robert Luna’s promotion. Three winners were selected: Sarah Hartnett,
Robin Morales, and Maricela Perryman. Each recipient and a
guest have been invited to attend the banquet. Recipients wishing to bring extra guests
will get the $45 member reservation rate.
Urban Journalism Workshop Dinner Recap – SAAHJ sponsored a dinner Wednesday, July 14 for the students participating in the workshop. SAAHJ members Alisa Armijo, Francisco Vara-Orta, Mary, Winston, Maclovio and Ed attended the dinner and networked with the students. Chet Hunt sent us a report on the first week of the workshop http://www.accd.edu/sac/j-p/UJWdaily.html
SABJ Community Publicity Workshop, August 28 – Maclovio
reminded us SAAHJ will collaborate with SABJ to help non-profits groups
learn how to contact the media, write press releases and conduct press
conferences. Mary and Elaine
Rodriguez volunteered to serve on the panel.
New Business:
SAAHJ Officer Elections
– Maclovio and Teresa opened mail-in ballots and collected the
ballots cast at the meeting. All the
ballots were counted during the meeting.
After a run-off for the At-Large Broadcast officer position,
Maclovio announced the results:
