Old Business

Banquet Financial Report

Ed distributed a spreadsheet listing expenses and income. The expenses are in line with previous years, except for the amount spent on the Henry Guerra Award.  So far, the banquet profit is $19,434, but checks still need to be collected from several donors: CBG The Benefit Group, Rumbo, Castro Family, Garcia 360, U.S. Army and UTSA. Teresa Niño offered to help Lorraine make collection follow-up calls.  Lorraine will provide the final registration list to identify additional donors who still need pay.

Joe thanked Lorraine, Melissa Vela-Williamson and Carol Schliesinger for all of their work on the banquet and recognized Elaine Ayala for her behind-the-scenes work.  Lorraine extended her appreciation to the committee members who provided hours of assistance.  She suggested we identify a chair this fall and start making plans now for next year’s event.

Community Publicity Workshop Recap

The August 28 workshop was held at Our Lady of the Lake University.  SAAHJ collaborated with SABJ to help non-profit organizations learn how to contact the media, write press releases and conduct press conferences.  Joe, Mary, Maclovio Perez, Cynthia Muñoz, Elaine Rodriguez and Teresa Garza served on the panel.

New Business

SAAHJ Direction/Visibility for 2004-05

Joe would like to see this association do more for its membership by providing professional development and community involvement opportunities.  He invited the members to make suggestions. Bonnie Pfister mentioned a Poynter workshop is scheduled next spring; Nora reminded us the NAHJ conference will be in Ft. Worth next year and there will be volunteer opportunities.

Joe announced the board members would take turns chairing the monthly meetings this year. This will allow the membership to get to know the board members better.

Project Learn To Read Fundraiser

Project Learn to Read teaches basic skills to adults at a 4th or 5th grade reading level.  Joe informed us there would be a fundraiser from 3 p.m. to midnight Saturday. Nov. 13, at the VFW Hall.  Joe has committed to helping out and invited everyone to join him support this worthy cause.

Bonnie added the Association for Women Journalists also participates in outreach programs.  She will forward announcements to Mary for distribution to SAAHJ members.

Media Mass

This year’s Media Mass is scheduled for 8 a.m. Oct. 10, at San Fernando Cathedral, with a reception immediately following the Mass.  Mary distributed a sign-in sheet and will send an e-mail invitation to the membership.  The RSVP deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 5.  Pews will be reserved for our group.  Please arrive by 7:30 a.m. and ask for the head usher.   SAAHJ will be represented during the Mass: Fabiola Santiago will handle the Spanish reading and Ed will do the English reading.  Elaine Rodriguez and Roxanne will take the offerings.

All-Media Mixer

This get together is organized with SAAHJ, SPJ and SABJ.  Joe will meet with the other organization’s presidents to select a date and place for the happy hour.

Announcements

Gridiron will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Watson Fine Arts Center at St. Phillips College.  Tickets are $15 in advance or $17 at the door.  Nora distributed posters and asked for help backstage the night of the event.  Call Nora at 387-0271 to volunteer.

Gridiron is SPJ’s scholarship fundraiser.

Las Comadres, an informal group of diverse women, meets monthly.  Contact Lorraine if you would like to attend the next gathering on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

The Association for Women In Communications will have their annual membership meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at Trinity University’s Holt Center. Mary mentioned Verónica Salazar would be recognized for her years of support to the AWC San Antonio chapter and its members.

Next meeting
Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Edwards Aquifer Authority, 1615 N. St. Mary’s. Margaret Garcia will be the host.  The guest speaker will be Beverly Zech from VIA Metropolitan Transit. She will make a presentation on the proposed Advanced Transportation District initiative.  Voters will get a chance to vote on the formation of this district in the November election.
