Selection of 2005 Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree

Joe explained the history behind the award and listed the criteria for selection.  He reminded us journalists and communications members are eligible to vote; students and guests cannot cast a ballot, according to our bylaws.

Mary read the list of nominees on the ballot: Roger Flores, Sr., Emilio Nicholas, Sr., Amparo Ortiz, and Lionel Sosa.

Nelda C. Skevington nominated Councilman Rogers Flores, Sr. and discussed his background. No bio was available for review.  Martha Tijerina highlighted some of the items on the bio for Emilio Nicholas, Sr., pioneer of Spanish language TV in the U.S.

Carol Schleslinger nominated Amparo Ortiz Promotions/Community Affairs Director from KWEX-TV.  Joe nominated Lionel Sosa, pioneer in Hispanic advertising.

Mary distributed the ballots.  The ballots were collected, student member Francisco Vara-Orta counted them and announced the results: Emilio Nicolas, Sr. – 17 votes; Lionel Sosa – 3 votes; Amparo Ortiz – 2 votes and Roger Flores – 1 vote.  Mary will notify Mr. Nicolas.

Old Business

2005 Gala

Mary reported a save-the-date e-mail was sent to the membership in December. Graphic Artist, Abram Alonso, is working on the invitation and program design.  We will obtain a mailing list from our honoree and sponsorship, scholarship, and silent auction letters will be sent in early February.  Please contact April Alcoser (Registration), Fabiola Santiago, (Scholarship) and Carol Schliesinger or Rebecca Minjarez Villarreal (Silent Auction) if you would like to help out.  Mary will work on securing a presenting sponsor.

SAAHJ Holiday Party

We had a good turn out for the party.  Joe suggested we book a location early for the 2005 party and we will try to keep the party on the first Saturday of December.  The Mariachi Bar was mentioned as a possibility.

New Business

Joe asked for ideas to make the organization more attractive to potential members and for SAAHJ projects suggestions.  Luis asked about seminars; Martha suggested participating in a parade during Fiesta.

Upcoming Meeting Chairs/Locations/Guest Speakers

Joe announced that several board members have volunteered to chair upcoming meetings, but we still have openings for February, May, and June.  Elaine Rodriguez offered to chair the February meeting at KENS-TV.  Martha and Yolanda suggested the Mexican American Unity Council for May.  Luis will host the June meeting at Palo Alto College.
