Call to Order/Welcome/Introductions
President Joe Sandoval called the meeting to order
at 10:36
a.m. and welcomed everyone.
Introductions by all present followed. Our host, Elaine
Rodriguez, gave a brief overview of KENS-TV.
Approval of the January
minutes/Secretary’s Report
Mary
Anthony asked if there were any corrections or additions to the January
minutes. Elaine made a motion to accept the January minutes as
submitted; Martha Tijerina seconded. The motion carried; there was no
discussion. Mary will forward the minutes to Roxanne Reyes for
posting on the SAAHJ Web site.
Treasurer’s Report
Ed Tijerina reported the following account balances. Operating
fund--$2,832.14, Regular Savings--$5,170.68, Foundation Fund
Checking--$23,398.20, Foundation Savings--$28,039.71.
Old Business
2005 Gala
Mary announced the
Express-News is our media sponsor. Our event is listed in the online
version of the What’s Happening calendar, with a link to our Web
site. The printed version will appear in the Monday, Feb. 28 edition
of the Express-News. Silent auction and scholarship letters have been
mailed. Our honoree, Emilio Nicolás, Sr., has provided two mailing
lists. Sponsorship letters will go out before the end of the month. Thanks
to Ernie Villarreal for addressing the envelopes in calligraphy. Two table
commitments, so far: The Nicolás Family and Trinity University. Table prices are $2,500, $1,500 and
$1,000. Individual non-member reservations are $100/person. SAAHJ
members will receive the special price of $45; members may bring 1 guest at
the member price. Graphic Artist Abram Alonso is working on the invitation
and program design. Please contact April Alcoser (Registration),
Fabiola Santiago, (Scholarship) and Carol Schliesinger or Rebecca Minjarez
Villarreal (Silent Auction) if you would like to help out.
New Business
The NAHJ Style Workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in room 350 at OLLU. SAAHJ members
are eligible for the NAHJ member price of $30, which includes a copy of the
stylebook. SAAHJ is sponsoring the breakfast. Register for the
workshop at www.nahj.org.
High School Writing Contest: Hernán Rozemberg was not able to attend the meeting,
but Joe announced he is handling the High School Writing Contest this
year. Joe asked all members involved in education to share contact
information with Hernán. Yolanda Arellano offered to help.
Michael Quintanilla will “adopt” Burbank High School and encourage participation. Luis Mercado will
share his mailing list. Ed Leal volunteered to make follow up
calls. Mary e-mail Hernán to let him know who volunteered to help.
Announcements
Nelda Skevington mentioned the Addy
Awards were being held at Convention Center tonight.
Mary encouraged members to submit entries
for the Women in Communications Proliner Awards. The deadline
has been extended to Tuesday, March 1.
Rose Orosco announced she would be modeling
in the Funky-Outrageous Fashion Show Thursday night. Alejandra
Ugarte is also participating.
Kris Edward Rodriguez informed us Feb. 27
through March 5 is National Engineering Week at UTSA.
Carol let us know SW Mental Health
Hospital has been accredited. They had 0 deficiencies.
Martha reminded us the San Antonio
Women’s Hall of Fame Induction is March 1.
Next meeting
Our next meeting is scheduled for
Saturday, March 19 at OLLU.
