2005 Gala Update

We have sold 19 tables, to date.  Table prices are $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000.  Individual non-member reservations are $100/person. SAAHJ members will receive the special reservation price of $45; members may bring 1 guest at the member price.  The Express-News is our presenting sponsor. All silent auction donors and table sponsors confirmed by the April 30 deadline were included in the invitation.  Invitations are being printed and will be hand addressed on Tuesday, May 31. We have received three scholarship applications, so far.  The postmark deadline is Saturday, May 28.  Thanks to the Express-News Community Relations office for providing 5 ads announcing the scholarship.  Scholarship information has also been mentioned in Metro Briefs and our event is listed in What’s Happening.  Fabiola Santiago, scholarship chair, did a live interview promoting the scholarship on Thursday, April 28 on the 10 p.m. KVDA-TV.

High School Writing Contest

Hernán Rozemberg was not able to attend the meeting and report on the contest.  Mary mentioned the information is on our Web site and the flyer was mailed to local and surrounding school districts.  No applicants yet; the postmark deadline is Saturday, May 28.

Discussion: SAAHJ’s position on renaming Commerce Street

The discussion was tabled until the June meeting.

Donation Request from The Rattler

Funding is being cut for St. Mary University’s award-winning newspaper, The Rattler.  We have received a request for a $500 donation.  The executive board has not made a recommendation.  Joe asked us to think about the request.  Teresa set this would set a precedence. Ed Leal pointed out we could provide help—our expertise, equipment, etc.—besides a monetary donation.

Announcements

Nominations for the 2005-06 SAAHJ Executive Board will be made at the June meeting.  Please review the duties of each office and nominate a fellow member or yourself, http://www.saahj.org/bylaws.html
