Call to
Order/Welcome/Introductions
Joe
Sandoval called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m. and welcomed
everyone. Introductions by all present followed. Joe recognized Dino Chiecchi, SAAHJ
founding member, and thanked Nora for providing the breakfast. Nora gave an
overview of her job responsibilities and discussed the editor and story
budget meetings held at the Express-News.
Nora can arrange for members to attend and observe the budget
meetings.
Approval of the June
minutes/Secretary’s Report
Mary
Anthony asked if there were any corrections or additions to the June
minutes. Luis made a motion to accept the June minutes as submitted; Nora
seconded. Mary will forward the minutes to Roxanne for posting on the SAAHJ
Web site.
Mary mentioned our 2005-06 dues must be paid before
casting a ballot and the gala reservation deadline is Wednesday, July
20. We need 2 separate checks for
dues and reservations. Ed explained
membership dues are deposited into the operating fund and gala reservation
checks go into the foundation fund checking, our 501c3 tax-exempt account.
Treasurer’s
Report
Ed
Tijerina reported the following account balances. Operating fund--$2,328.69, Regular
Savings--$5,173.67, Foundation Fund Checking--$43,972.91, Foundation
Savings--$32,755.82.
Ed reported we in the process of switching our accounts
to Frost Bank to take advantage of lower fees. We will have 2 checking
accounts—operating and foundation. CDs will be purchase rather than
opening new savings accounts.

Business
2005 Gala
Update
Sponsorship--We have sold 25 tables, to date, and
received more than $1,000 in donations from those not able to attend. Table prices are $2,500, $1,500 and
$1,000. Individual non-member
reservations are $100/person. SAAHJ members are eligible for a special
reservation price of $45; members may purchase one additional reservation
at the member price. Reservations must be made by Wednesday, July 20;
walk-ins cannot be accommodated.
Scholarship--All the scholarship recipients will
attend the gala. Letters and checks will be mailed to the financial aid
offices the week of the gala. Scholarship presenters will receive their
portion of the script next week via e-mail.
Silent Auction—The bid brochure is being
printed.
Upcoming—The event program will be sent to the
printer next week.
High School Writing Contest
Winner Kimberley Kokernot and Runner-Up Rebecca Page,
both of Health Careers High School, will attend the gala. Runner-Up Crystal
Melchor, Lanier High School, will not be able to join us. The students will receive savings bonds
and be recognized from the stage.
The winning entry will be posted on our Web site.
New Business
Elections for the 2005-06 SAAHJ Executive Board
Dues
were collected and ballots were distributed. Hans Manske and Maclovio Perez
counted the ballots and announced the results:

Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, September 17 at Palo
Alto College. Luis Mercado will be our host.
