2005 Gala Update
Mary Anthony reported total
revenue for the 2005 Scholarship Gala was $51,550; expenses totaled
$35,770.47 resulting in a profit of $15,779.53.
Mary is still collecting payment from some members for their dinner
reservations. Overall, there were 33 tables sold, 19 members attended,
$2,500 in donations and silent auction raised $6,215.
Mary explained that the
scholarship amounts had increased and are based on the quality of the
applications. Also, the fundraising goals for this year’s gala were
not met. The gala is honoree driven.
Students Francisco Vara Orta
and Denise Salinas requested a donation between $1,500-$500 to purchase
technical equipment for The Rattler. They also would like to have
more resources to train staff and students.
After several questions from
members about their current fundraising efforts, Francisco said
advertisement sales is their main source of funding and that they are
limited by the University in regards to contacting alumni/businesses for
donations.
Ed Tijerina asked if they
would accept in-kind donations and if the association could organize a
fundraiser to benefit them. Joe said
these activities would open the door for other schools to ask for support.
Various suggestions were made on how to access additional funding sources.
Mary suggested the Association draft a Donation Policy.
Awarding method for scholarship funds
The item was tabled this month. Joe preferred to wait
until Dino Chiecchi is present since he had originally raised the
question.

Elections for the 2005-06 SAAHJ At-Large Print Office
Joe announced that Hernán Rozemberg had resigned last
month. Carol received two nominations, one of which was declined. The
members present elected Dino Chiecchi unanimously.
Distinguished Speakers Series Proposal
Ernie Villarreal requested support from the membership
to host a speaker series with the objective of raising awareness and create
an additional source of revenue for the organization.
Ernie explained that the series would serve as an
outreach program for media and also open to the public. He would like to
have Sheryl Scully be our first speaker. Ernie suggested other topics
related to Hispanics, including the upcoming Mexican presidential
elections. He has already talked to several hotels to get quotes.
After several cost-related questions from the
membership, Joe asked that the proposal be approved first and then
concentrate on the details.
Ed made a motion to approve the proposal so the planning
phase can begin. Elaine Rodriguez seconded. The membership voted and the
proposal was approved unanimously.

–4112 San Pedro Ave.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at
