Joe thanked everyone for coming to the media mixer at Aldaco’s. The reserved space had to be shared with other organizations, but everyone had a good time.

Distinguished Speakers Series Update

Ernie confirmed Alfredo Corchado as the speaker for the May 19 speaker series. He will discuss the Mexican Presidential elections. The luncheon will take place at The Westin Riverwalk hotel from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. The meal will be similar to the one served at last year’s luncheon. Ernie will develop a flyer to promote the luncheon.

2006 Scholarship Gala

Carol said she resent the scholarship press release and has been working to secure mentions in several media outlets. Registration Chair, Javier Flores and Silent Auction Chair, Rafael Saenz were not present to give updates. Guerra de Berry and Coody will be doing the invitation pro-bono.

Ed Tijerina asked for an update on table sales. Ernie explained that letters have gone out and he’s waiting for responses. Mary asked about costs for buying tables and asked for a copy of the letter to be shared with the Executive Board. Lorraine mentioned she is working with Maclovio on the production of the video about Lionel Sosa. Joe reminded Ernie that the Executive Board is ready to help out with tasks. He asked Ernie to let everyone know how members can help out with the gala. Carol mentioned that Guerra De Berry Coody were trying to get the invitation printing at a reduced cost or pro-bono. Lorraine said members could really help out by making follow-up calls to sell tables. Nora mentioned she will get the Express-News photos donated for the silent auction. Ernie asked Nora for a $500 deposit check for the Westin. Javier Rodriguez asked for information about table sales because he knows someone who might be interested in buying a table for the gala.

High School Writing Contest

Lorraine announced the deadline for the contest is coming up on May 26.

 New business

National Writers’ Workshop

Carol shared information about the National Writers’ Workshop and encouraged members to register for the workshop. Many of the panelists are Pulitzer Prize recipients. This is a good opportunity to hear from many great journalists without having to incur travel expenses.

Ed Tijerina said the workshop is sponsored by the Poynter Institute and the San Antonio Express-News. It's a good learning opportunity.
