2006 Scholarship Gala

Joe said board members met yesterday to go over tasks that need to be completed before the gala. Joe was not present at the meeting and asked Ed to give a summary. Ed summarized what was discussed and said all board members took some of the pending tasks for completion. He thanked Maclovio for coming up a few years ago with the idea of having board meetings. Ed reminded all members to expect a call  in the next few days to request sponsorships from their employers.

Ernie announced confirmed sponsors, including Verizon Wireless, which donated tickets to the sold-out Shakira concert for the silent auction. Ernie added he received a list from Lionel Sosa and sponsorship letters were sent the previous weekend. He also got a call from San Antonio Press. They bought 3 tickets and are trying to gather more people to buy a table. Elaine Rodriguez said Ed Tijerina will be on Great Day SA the following Monday. Mary Anthony said the deadline for companies interested in buying a table should be July 19. A final count has be given to the Westin on July 21.

Luis Mercado said Palo Alto College and  Northwest Vista College will share a table. Carol gave a brief summary of the scholarship recipients. Ed gave a brief summary of the gala for new members who are not aware of the event. Rafael said there’s approximately 20 items for the silent auction. Lorraine asked if Lionel is donating one of his paintings for the auction, since he has donated one  before. Elaine said Lionel should consider buying a table first. Maclovio said the honoree should get a whole table for free. Mary said honorees always have to buy tables. Honorees receive two complimentary tickets. Joe agreed with Mary. Lorraine added it’s been very difficult to get in touch with Lionel to request a mailing list.

Maclovio gave an update on the video. He interviewed several people and the overall tone is light-hearted. The video was not played because there was no VHS in the building. He also said we will need a laptop, projecter and screen to play the video at the gala. Elaine asked if the board could borrow the tape to watch it before the event.

Ernie said Henry Brun will play at the event and said Mary Dailey would be on vacation that day. Mary asked Ernie when the invitations would be printed. She asked for a stack of invitations. Lorraine asked about the program and Carol gave a brief summary of it. Ernie said the committee met for the tasting. Rafael gave a summary of the menu.  Carol reminded everyone to email Javier guests lists. Luis Mercado asked if the scholarship recipients receive tickets.

Joe said Lionel Sosa had asked to sell his books at the event. Joe said the decision made by the board was that to sell books, the Association would request he buy a table and possibly donate an item for  silent auction. Ed said in the past they've had honorees always want to help out with tables sales. Ed said it's been disconcerted. Elaine asked who is coordinating the book sales for Lionel. Carol believed it is Cynthia Muñoz. Carol asked if it would be out of place to ask him to donate a percentage of the proceeds to the Scholarship Fund.

Maclovio asked if the requests are limited to Hispanic reporters.

Latino Forum

Javier said the committee met a few weeks before to brainstorm on ideas for the Latino Forum. He explained he thought of the forum idea while listening to another forum on NPR. He added the overall idea is to get Hispanics in the community to discuss how Hispanics are covered in the media and address what can be done to balance the coverage and depictions of Hispanics. He said it would be a yearly forum with news organizations to look at the year in perspective, what's happened and what could have been done better.

Mary said Ed Leal will send an email to the committee to meet next week at Trinity Universit y. Members interested are welcomed to attend, because they are looking for help.  Javier said he is leaving back to Indiana and can't run the committee, but would be happy to help out when he's back in town.
