Elaine
thanked Maclovio Perez for hosting the meeting. Maclovio thanked his friend
Bobby Acosta with United Century 21 for catering the breakfast. Maclovio
gave a brief summary of the history of WOAI and welcomed everyone.
Secretary’s report:
Carol
Schliesinger asked if there were any changes or additions to the January
minutes. Elaine made a motion to accept the January minutes as presented.
Ed Tijerina seconded the motion. Motion passed.
Treasurer’s report:
Elaine
said Nora Lopez was not able to attend the meeting because she was feeling
under the weather. Elaine announced the operating account had a balance of
$5,894.64 and the foundation account had a balance $62,213.76. Ed told
members to expect the balances of these accounts to go up and down during
the next few months, since its Gala season and the treasurer will be making
deposits from sponsorships and withdrawals to cover expenses related to the
gala.
Old Business:
2007 Scholarship Gala
Mary
said she received a list of friends from the honoree to receive sponsorship
letters. Letters will go out soon. The committee is looking for more
companies to request items for the silent auction. If anyone can think of
companies who can donate, please let Mary know. Ed said Nora already
received the $5000 check from the presenting sponsor.
Media Mixer
Ed
announced the next media mixer will take place May 9 at El Mirador
restaurant. Ed said a few years ago the association would hold these mixers
with other journalist groups, but the SAAHJ was the only one organization
contributing funds for the events. Ed will send out an Evite to the members.
Speaker Committee
Ed Leal
was not present to give an update.
New Business:
Student Liaison
Elaine
Rodriguez said Carol had come up with a good idea for the Association and
asked Carol to present it. Carol said she thought of the current relations
we have with our current student members. Besides the annual scholarships,
there is little being done to mentor the student members, draw them to the
association’s activities and foster relations with those who will be
future journalists. Carol proposed the Association designate a new board
position that would be responsible for student affairs, as well as organize
events and programs to foster the Association’s relations with its
student members.
Elaine
Rodriguez said the new board position would take effect as of the new board
year, because there would need to be changes made to the
Association’s bylaws.
Yolanda
Arellano suggested having the City of San Antonio proclaim a week as Media
Education Week, and the Association could have these events held during
that week to bring more awareness to the work the Association does.
High School Writing Contest
Elaine
announced that the Board decided to cancel the high school writing contest
this year since there was very little time left to coordinate it. Ed said
the decision was made because of the timing issue and how it would affect
the quality and outcome of the contest.
Announcements:
Joe
Sandoval – Patricio Espinoza said he spoke with Joe Sandoval and he was
in good spirits. Patricio suggested organizing a benefit event for Joe.
Members made several suggestions on what kind of event to organize. Members
also discussed whether it would be an SAAHJ sponsored event or whether it
would be an event organized by a committee called “Friends of Joe
Sandoval.” Elaine Rodriguez called a special board meeting to take
place right after the general meeting to discuss the options.
Women in
Communication Proliner award – Mary announced the deadline has been extended.
The new deadline is Feb. 26
Ford
Salute for Education – Cynthia Muñoz asked everyone to make
nominations for all those who deserve to be honored for their work in the
education field. Deadline for nominations is March 1.
Meeting
was adjourned at 11:04 a.m.
Next
meeting: Sat., March 17; Trinity
University.
Respectfully
submitted,
Carol
Schliesinger
