 SAAHJ General Meeting

Minutes – Apr. 21, 2007

Tito’s Restaurant

 

 

Members in attendance, per sign-in sheet: Ernie Villarreal, Ariana Romero, Ernie Zuniga, Mary Anthony, Nora Lopez, Elaine Rodriguez, Roxanne Reyes, Jennifer Herrera,  Norma Lacy, Jacque Crouse, Kris Rodriguez, Ed Tijerina, Danny Sanchez, Kay O’Donnell, Carol Schliesinger.

 

Elaine Rodriguez called the meeting to order at 10:29 a.m. Introductions by all present followed.

 

Secretary Report:

Carol Schliesinger asked if there were any changes or corrections to the March minutes. Mary Anthony said she had emailed Carol some changes. Carol said she received and made the changes. Elaine made a motion to accept the minutes as submitted. Nora Lopez seconded the motion. Motion passed.

 

Treasurer Report

 

Nora Lopez reported the following account balances: Operating account: $5,814.64; Foundation account: $76,570.53. Nora said the tax bill was one of the biggest expenses. The Association paid its CPA $2,600. Ed Tijerina explained that after the Association switched banks, several forms had to be updated in a different program, which explains the large accounting expense.

 

Old Business

 

2007 Scholarship Gala

 

Mary said 15 tables were sold; one table of individuals. The committee collected 30 silent auction items. Invitations have already been sent to the printer. Ernie Zuniga, from KABB Fox station will serve as the MC. The committee has secured a florist and photographer. Anyone interested in sponsorships please contact Mary or Nora. The gala will be held on Thu. July 26 Members can register to attend the event at a special rate of $45. Deadline is April 30.

 

At-Large Broadcast Board Member Elections

 

Elaine said Ed Leal resigned to the board position, since he took a position at the Alameda Museum. Elaine added that at the March meeting nominations were made to elect Ariana Romero. Mary made a motion to accept the nomination by affirmation. Elaine seconded the motion. Motion passed.

 

NWW

 

Nora said the Association has been asked to sponsor the National Writers Workshop again this year. The organizers will give the SAAHJ 6 complimentary registrations and will allow the May general meeting to be held in conjunction with the workshop. The distribution of the comp tickets has not been determined yet. Elaine made a motion to sponsor this year’s writers workshop. Mary seconded the motion. Motion passed.  

 

New Business

 

Hispanic Media Awards

 

Carol said Chris Day, organizer for the awards, asked the Association for sponsorship and is also offering SAAHJ members a discounted rate of $850 for tables and $85 for individual tickets. Elaine said the board would evaluate any sponsorship proposal if it was sent in writing so a decision could be made and communicated via email. The awards ceremony takes place on May 24 at the Marriott Rivercenter.

 

Announcements

 

UTSA fundraiser - Kris Rodriguez gave special thanks to Connie Murphy at WOAI TV for all her help organizing the telethon that raised $90,000 and helped get a $150,000 donation from Bill Greehey for Adrian Saucedo who needs a heart transplant. Kris said the headlines throughout the country read “San Antonio residents raised $500,000 to save a life” and it was very moving.

 

Hispanic veterans - Kris mentioned that the web site by UT Professor Maggie Rivas Rodriguez has stories of Hispanic veterans online, including several of his relatives. He said other members can visit the website to see if they too have relatives. Professor Rivas also mentioned the Ken Burns documentary on PBS documentary. Ed Tijerina said that PBS will be adding a section about Hispanics after all.

 

Museo Alameda - Kris also mentioned the Museo opened its doors this weekend and attendance is free during the weekend.

 

Armed Forces Parade - the parade will be held downtown on May 19.

 

Joe Sandoval - Ed said members of the Association organized a second fundraiser for Joe Sandoval that raised over $1,200. Kris Rodriguez said the bands were great. Elaine said the board decided to give a $200 gift as gratuity for the donated barbeque. Ed thanked everyone who came out to the event and volunteers. Kris asked how Joe is feeling. Ed said he is doing a lot better; he is walking more, gaining his appetite and attitude back.

 

 

Meeting was adjourned at 10:53 a.m.
