General Meeting
Minutes – June 16, 2007

Members in attendance: Nora Lopez, Mary Anthony, Elaine
Rodriguez, Ed Tijerina, Melissa Vela-Williamson, Roxanne Reyes, Ernie
Zuniga, Danny Sanchez, Alison Beshur, Ernie Villarreal and Carol
Schliesinger.
Elaine
Rodriguez called the meeting to order at 10:40 a.m. and welcomed everyone. Introductions
by all present followed.
Secretary Report
Carol
Schliesinger asked if there were any changes or corrections to the May
minutes. Elaine made a motion to accept the minutes as submitted. Ed
Tijerina seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Treasurer Report
Nora
Lopez reported the following account balances: Operating account: $6,470.81;
Foundation account: $78,508.13.
Old Business
2007 Scholarship Gala
Mary said invitations
were mailed. The San Antonio Express-News will run some community service
ads promoting the gala, hopefully 3 ads. Scholarships will be judged next
weekend. Menu tasting will take place June 27 at 2 p.m. at the Westin
Riverwalk Hotel. RSVP deadline is July 19 by 5 p.m. Reservations need to be
made; walk-ins cannot be accommodated. This year guests will be able to pay
with credit cards too. So far Mary reported selling 23 tables, and more
sponsorship forms might have come in since the mail hasn’t been
checked in the past few days. The silent auction already has between 40-50
items. Deadline to be listed in the bid book is July 2. This year there
will also be an art sale, in addition to the silent auction. The members
reduced rate to attend is $45 for up to two guests.
Ed Tijerina asked how many
scholarships the committee was considering giving out. Mary said the
scholarship judges traditionally award between $10,000-12,000 every year to
scholarship recipients depending on the applications’ quality.
National Writers Workshop Recap
Mary
said the Association sponsored the event again this year and had a table at
the workshop to distribute membership information. Alison said we signed up
some new members during the two-day conference. Melissa Vela-Williamson
said the sessions were inspirational and helped her with her writing.
Membership Renewals
Carol
said membership renewals for the 2007-2008 year will be due at the July
general meeting. Mary said that all those members nominated for a position
on the Board of Directors, need to pay their membership dues before the
July meeting, when members will cast their votes.
Hispanic Media Awards
Elaine
said the event was good. Vicente Fox was a great speaker.
New Business
Urban Journalism Dinner
Elaine
said every year the Association has sponsored a dinner for students and
faculty of the San Antonio College Urban Journalism Workshop to meet and
network with members. The dinner this year will take place on June 20, at
6:30 p.m. at Panchito’s on McCullough. The Association covers the
cost of the dinner. An email will be sent to members tomorrow and deadline
to rsvp will be on June 18 at 10 a.m.

also reminded all members that voting will take place during the July
general meeting.

position of At-large Communications, Ed Tijerina nominated Melissa
Vela-Williamson; Nora Lopez seconded. Elaine Rodriguez nominated Roxanne
Reyes; Ed seconded. Melissa nominated Carol Schliesinger; Nora seconded.
For the
position of At-large Print, Elaine nominated Ed Tijerina; Nora seconded.
For the
position of At-large Broadcast, Danny Sanchez nominated Ernie Zuniga;
Elaine seconded.
For the
position of Treasurer, Alison Beshur nominated Danny Sanchez; Melissa
seconded. Elaine nominated Mary Anthony; Nora seconded.
For the
position of Secretary, Danny nominated Alison Beshur; Nora seconded. Elaine
Rodriguez nominated Roxanne Reyes; Nora seconded.
For the
position of Vice President, Mary nominated Dino Chiecchi, Ed seconded.
Melissa nominated Ernie Villarreal; Carol seconded.
For the
position of President, Mary nominated Elaine Rodriguez; Alison seconded.
Announcements
Joe
Sandoval Update - Ed Tijerina said Joe
is feeling much better and will return to work in August. Mary said that
many people have been asking for his address to send him cards. Ed gave out
Joe’s address and cell phone number for those who would like to
contact him.
Wine
Olympics – Melissa announced the new Big Brothers, Big Sisters event
will take place during the summer months at several locations. Guests will
be able to taste wines from around the world competing for gold, silver and
bronze medals. Tickets are $60 per person. A portion of the proceeds will benefit
Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
Meeting was adjourned at 11:21 a.m.
