changes or corrections. Ed made a motion to accept the minutes. Carol
seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Treasurer Report
Mary
reported the following account balances: Operating account: $5,025.27;
Foundation account: $70,257.28.
Old Business
Gala
Mary
said the 10th Annual Scholarship and Awards Gala will be July 31
at the Westin Riverwalk. Liz Ruiz of KTSA-Radio will receive the Henry
Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism and Patricia
Diaz Dennis of AT&T, Inc. will receive the SAAHJ Community Service
Award.
Reservations
are being taken through July 24. Mary said she needs a written reservation
by the deadline and walk-ins can’t be accommodated. Any dietary needs must
be noted ahead of time. Member rate is $50 each and members can purchase
two reservations at that rate. Non-member rate is $75 for an individual
reservation. Tables run $1,500, $1,000 and $800. Programs are in layout and
will go to the printer next Friday. So far, 20 tables have been sold.
Donation to OLLU
Elaine
said the board met last month with Kay O’Donnell, SAAHJ member, journalism
instructor and adviser for the Lake
Front, the student newspaper. Kay said she would place a plaque on
whatever item was purchased, so students would know it was donated by
SAAHJ. The board agreed to spend $650.
Mary
said we’re in a holding pattern. It was decided that SAAHJ would purchase a
particular item, but we haven’t heard from OLLU about what is needed. Mary
said either she or the incoming treasurer would purchase the item.
Rosalind
asked if it would be possible for there to be additional funds added to
that. Elaine said that would be a possibility with the incoming board.
T-shirts
Elaine
said members have until the end of the meeting to purchase an SAAHJ
T-shirt. If someone wants a size she doesn’t have with her or the T-shirts
sell out, Elaine said she would deliver them or would have them available
for pick up at the KTSA-Radio station. Any T-shirts remaining would be
donated to the students at OLLU. Before the sale at the meeting, there were
35-40 T-shirts remaining. T-shirts are $10.
Urban Journalism
Workshop dinner
SAAHJ
sponsored a dinner on June 25 for students enrolled in the Urban Journalism
Workshop, a two-week journalism boot camp for high school students.
Elaine
said it was a good turn-out. She said SAAHJ has for the last several years
sponsored the dinner and hopefully that it will continue.
Kris
said SAAHJ members sat at different tables with the students and talked
about what they do in their jobs. The students talked about the stories
they were working on and their experience with working journalists. One of
the students was working on a story about a homeless man. Another was
working on a story about steroid use. Students asked about what trends
working professionals were seeing and where they should focus in media
occupations.
Mary
said they sent copies of the newspaper that was published at the end of the
camp. SAAHJ is listed as a sponsor in the newspaper. The E-N prints their stories on a space
available basis.
New Business
Election
Mary
said if a member hasn’t voted by mail, then he/she must pay the membership
dues before he/she is allowed to vote at the meeting. After everyone voted,
Mary and Alison counted the ballots. Elaine called a break in the meeting
so ballots could be counted. When the meeting resumed, the results were
announced.
